Project Title: "Motion-Enhanced Flatlays": Elevating Static Ads for Meta Client: Letterfest (Personalised Birthday Gifts)
The Brief: To increase engagement and ad performance for Letterfest's personalised "Daddy and Me" portraits on Meta platforms. The objective was to test if adding subtle motion to high-quality static flatlay photography could unlock better algorithmic traction and "thumb-stopping" power than standard still images.
The Approach: I developed a series of "moving stills" that bridge the gap between photography and video. Recognizing that Meta's algorithms favor video content, I applied subtle, continuous camera movements—slow zooms and pans—to what would traditionally be a static ad. This technique creates a dynamic viewing experience that arrests the scroll without the resource intensity of a full video production.
Key Challenges & Solutions:
Algorithmic Optimization: The primary challenge was improving placement and reach. By converting static assets into video formats with calculated movement, we were able to access video-first inventory (like Reels) and signal higher quality to the algorithm, resulting in improved traction and reach compared to the static versions.
Subtle Engagement: The motion needed to enhance, not distract. I ensured the movement was gentle enough to maintain the premium feel of the product photography while using animated overlays (like the photo-to-illustration arrow) to clearly demonstrate the personalization process in seconds.
Outcome: A highly effective ad variation that proved the power of subtle motion. By transforming static flatlays into dynamic video assets, the campaign achieved higher engagement rates and better placement efficiency, demonstrating that even minimal movement can significantly impact ad performance on social platforms.
